The New Hampshire GOP Presidential Primary provided momentum for three candidates: 2 Mormons and 1 libertarian Constitutionalist.

The LDS community has always rejoiced when Mormons achieve mainstream success. But should they rejoice about the showing of a Republican who is a very libertarian leaning conservative, Ron Paul?

Many young Mormons shout, "Yes!" Passionate young men and women insist that the natural LDS political philosophy is libertarianism. In a recently published book that is selling like hotcakes, Latter-Day Liberty: A Gospel Approach to Government and Politics, BYU graduate Connor Boyack declares:

"American Latter-day Saints once were mostly Democrats, and now they have tied themselves by and large to the mast of the Republican Party. This book will discuss why Latter-day Saints might instead consider associating themselves with a political philosophy that is both grounded in the gospel and tied to true principles. That political philosophy is popularly identified by a single word: liberty".

One of the best books I've read this year is the new book by W. Cleon Skousen, author of the bestseller, "The Five Thousand Year Leap". His newest book, "The Cleansing of America" is a sequel to "The Majesty of God's Law", and was just published by his family. (Skousen passed away in 2006) He told his family he didn't feel comfortable about going public with the book until "the time was right." This book deals with prophecy and the latter days.

Before Skousen passed, his family asked him when that "right time" to publish the book would be, and he said, "You will know. It will be dark time when the Constitution is being abandoned, when economic turmoil boils on every level of society and government. It will be a time when people give up hope." Are you excited that the 2010 Winter Olympics start in just two days? I am!

I love to watch all the events and the opening and closing ceremonies.

The Winter Olympics of 2002 were here in Salt Lake City, and for my birthday that year I was able to go and walk around Olympic Village downtown. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I saw figure skater, Brian Boitano giving a free public interview, and I saw NBC broadcasters doing their interviews live. I remember all the security helicopters flying overhead because the Olympics were held here only five months after 9/11. I am already praying that the 2010 Olympics will be safe and the Lord will watch over everyone participating, the athletes as well as the audience.

Faith in Troubled Times

Next Sunday is my Stake Conference. Yesterday we learned that Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will be speaking. I'm so excited, I've never been to a meeting where an apostle of the Church spoke.

I've watched General Conferences for years, but this will be the first time that I'll be present at a talk by a member of the Presidency. I don't know what he'll speak on but I know he will be inspired by the Spirit.

I found a talk online by Elder Ballard and it covers two of my passions, "the last days" and "faith". This talk was given 18 years ago, but it is even more important and timely for our day. Read it today and be blessed!

"Avatar" Movie and "Pure Language"

The biggest movie of the holiday season has been James Cameron's blockbuster epic "Avatar". What I found most interesting and intriguing, in this movie, is the spiritual messages throughout, and also the language of the Na'vi people, who are the focus of this movie. The Na'vi live on a lovely planet moon called Pandora in a far away star system. They live in peace and oneness until aliens (Americans) land on their beautiful jungle planet and start destroying the environment and finally give an 'extermination order' (sound familiar?) so that they might get the valuable minerals found only under the Na'vi's commual home, "The Hometree". In the end, several of the American's join with the Na'vi to save their civilization.

What I like so much about the movie was the Na'vi's love for one another and their joining in oneness, to live, survive and heal one another. It reminds me so much of Jesus' words: "I say unto you be one; and if ye are not one, ye are not mine.: (D&C 83:27)

Also, in making this movie, a whole new language was developed, as the language of the Na'vi. What I found amazing is that I recently read about Joseph Smith's Pure Language, which is mentioned in the latest installment of "The Joseph Smith Papers" books, where the name of God given in Pure Language is "Aw-man".

Amazingly, in the language of the Na'vi, the meaning of "Aw" is "One".

On the Na'vi planet of Pandora their "spirit guide" is a kind of Mother Earth spirit called "Ey-wa", (leader One). The 'wa' title, may be the feminine version of "Aw".

Joseph Smith's Pure Language states the name of God is "Aw-man"; so can the language of James Cameron's Na'vi in "Avatar" be just a coincidence or does "Aw" really mean both 'God' and 'One'?

Makes sense to me!

Making Wire Christmas Angels

This is a fun and easy project for women's groups, Relief Society evening meetings or for families to make together. These sweet little angels are so cute and perfect for Christmas decorations. We made about 40 of them in a couple hours. Our Relief Society Christmas Dinner has the theme of "Angels Among Us", and we are using these little angels for table favors. They can stand alone or be used as tree ornaments when you add a little decorative ribbon to the top. All you need to make them is wire and pearl beads, maybe some leftover ribbon. Simple and SO FUN!

It is about how we are strengthened by the Temple and the blessings found there. I'm looking forward to the dedication of the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple on August 23rd. And I'm really looking forward to going through the Temple and receiving my endowments in November of this year. I've had the blessing of visiting five temples so far, four in Utah and one in Idaho. I think my favorite is the Jordan River Temple, pictured above.

One of my interests is old songs from the 50's and 60's. I have another blog called "A Delicious Decade of Music" that celebrates the music of the 60's....
popular hits of the baby-boomer generation.

While researching for my music blog, I came across this beautiful religious song from the 50's. It's called "He" and it is speaking of God our Heavenly Father and His gift of forgiveness.

This recording reached #4 on the Billboard Top Hits chart in 1954. Can you imagine that happening these days? Most music on the charts today I wouldn't even want a child to hear. Our society and culture has certainly changed alot over the last 50 years. Thank goodness Our Father in Heaven NEVER changes!

David Archuleta, LDS teenager, and runner-up on last year's "American Idol" is in Utah this week and will be doing a concert at the new stadium of the Utah professional soccer team, the Re'al. The Deseret News did an interview and video with him, updating what he's been up to lately.

David is still the sweet boy who we saw on tv last year. His fame and fortune have not changed him, sucess has not spoiled him but seems to have made him stronger and yet more humble. He still know what matters most...faith and family.

What a super role model he is for today's young people!

This has been an exciting last few days! Yesterday, I received my Patriarchal Blessing and today I am going to the first day of the Open House for the newest temple, The Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple. The open house is through August 1st, so plan to attend.

"With The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints introducing its new 24/7 radio service on Monday, potential listeners who think they can tune in with traditional transistors and car radios are going to need a little more modern thinking in order to find "Mormon Channel."

Billed as originating from "Temple Square" (more specifically, broadcast studios located inside the LDS Conference Center on the church's headquarters campus), the Mormon Channel is accessible via the Internet and eight select HD radio affiliates across the country — radio stations of the church's Bonneville International, in Salt Lake City, Seattle, Los Angeles, Phoenix, St. Louis, Chicago, Cincinnati and Washington, D.C.

The HD signal is transmitted at KSL FM 102.7 channel 2; Internet access is available either at radio.lds.org or mormonchannel.org.

Jordan River Temple

Yesterday, I went to the Jordan River Temple. It's one of the most beautiful temples I have ever seen. It's the fourth temple I've visited. The grounds are amazing with a flower garden and a water fountain. The inside is also beautiful. I was only able to visit the lobby and the baptistry, but it was such a sacred place. The best part of the visit was the kindness of the temple workers! They were so loving and helpful and friendly. If you are ever near West Jordan, Utah be sure to see the Jordan River Temple. If you have a temple recommend, take time to do some baptisms. The waiting room is lovely. There is a huge picture window, looking out to the font. And a volunteer plays soft organ music in the background to emphasize the holiness of the setting. I did 21 baptisms and confirmations yesterday and it was such a blessing! My dad, my grandma and my grandpa were baptized.

There was rejoicing in heaven and on earth!

Cookie Baking Help?

This morning, I'm making cookies for Relief Society Enrichment meeting tonight. I don't know if they will turn out! They are suppose to be molasses cookies. You are told to pinch the dough and roll little balls. But mine is more like cake batter than dough!!! I guess it could be because the recipe called for one cup of sugar and I used one cup of softened honey instead. I have put the "dough/batter" in the refridgerator for a while to see if it will harden and I get the desired result.

Has anyone ever run into this problem before? Any suggestions? I usually just buy ready-made cookies to bring to events, but I was so happy that I had all the ingredients required for
this recipe and it seemed easy to do! Hope it turns out. Maybe it will end up being molasses cake, rather than cookies!

(Update: I finally put the batter in the freezer and it did turn into useable dough. They are kinda flat cookies, not puffy like most molasses cookes, but I put a little red cinnamon candy in the middle of each one, so at least they look pretty! And I love the taste of molasses!)

"The LDS Church today began taking reservations for tours of its just-completed Oquirrh Mountain Temple. People can get the free tickets to the temple's open house by contacting the reservation call center at 800-521-5105, 801-240-7645, or online at www.lds.org/reservations.
The Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple open house will go from June 1 to Aug. 1, except for Sundays and July 4 and 24th. After the open house, the temple will be formally dedicated starting on Aug. 22. Six dedicatory sessions will be held. After that, it will only be open for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who have a valid "temple recommend," which attests to the person's worthiness to enter that sacred space.

Grow a Garden!

Today, I'm working on my garden. I don't know how the pioneers did it!!! Last week I planted six rows of seeds...spinach, cauliflower, beans, lettuce, zucchini, and radish. It was hard work, but fulfilling. I was beginning to look forward to a bountiful crop in a few months. Then "disaster" struck! Yesterday, we had the little pond behind our house cleaned. They drain the pond with a small pump, and since the fish water makes a great fertilizer it was my "smart idea" to put the water on the vegetable garden. So the pond cleaners (sweet boys who go to BYU!), put on an extra drainage hose so the fish water would reach the garden. Well, I had no idea the power of those drainage pumps! The water shot out with a force of probably 500 miles per hour! The nice black garden top soil went flying and my newly planted seeds all flowed out of the garden on wave almost big enough for a surfer! So... there went the garden. What took a couple hours to plant, was gone in a couple seconds! I found about 10 bean seeds (they are big), hiding in the lawn. So starting with that small remnant, I will replant, and remember not to drain the pond in the vegetable garden again. An important lesson! I imagine the pioneers had lots of lessons like that along the way, and probably had to replant more than once, some years, and they planted acres, not a small garden like I have. Yet they carried on, and remembered to sing and give thanks that "All is well, All is well." I hope I can do that, and be grateful for everything,
even fish water fertilizer!

Man’s Search for Divine Truth

Following the Lord’s pattern to hear and give heed to divine truth will help you build a personal spiritual foundation and determine what you will become.

"Where is divine truth to be found? It is to “hear the voice of the Lord, … [hear] the voice of His servants, … give heed to the words of the prophets and apostles” (D&C 1:14). Hear and heed. To hear is relatively simple. To heed and apply what is heard becomes life’s perpetual challenge.

First, hear the voice of the Lord. Communication from the Lord about divine truth or spiritual knowledge is found in the scriptures. It is called revelation—literally, “to make known or uncover” (Bible Dictionary, “Revelation,” 762). It is given to “know how to worship, and know what you worship” (D&C 93:19). Elder Neal A. Maxwell said, “Only with revelation can we do the Lord’s work according to His will in His way and according to His timing” (“Revelation,” First Worldwide Leadership Training Meeting, Jan. 2003, 5). “Without revelation, all would be guesswork, darkness, and confusion” (Bible Dictionary, 762).

Second, hear the voice of His servants. Revelation or divine truth is given by the will of the Lord to His servants in different ways and times and is also found in the scriptures. “Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7).

Third, give heed to the words of the prophets and apostles. To give heed is to pay special attention. It is to listen to those who have been called by God to be the especial living witnesses of Jesus Christ for our time. It implies that they are recognized in this role, that a response is given to their invitation to receive a personal spiritual confirmation that their teachings are true, and that a commitment to follow them will be made.

In summary, the Lord has a pattern of sharing divine truth with prophets to guide and bless us through the challenges and evils of life: hear and heed. Our personal spiritual foundation needs to be built upon this pattern if we want to enjoy the blessings of the Lord. So it is not enough to search the scriptures to know the mind of the Lord. It must be followed by an act of faith, accepting to do the will of the Lord by obeying His commandments, before we can enjoy the blessings of the Lord. A personal spiritual confirmation of this process by asking and believing that we will receive becomes, then, the prayer of our lifetime."

The folk song spiritual, "Down to the River to Pray", is included on the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's latest CD, "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing", which includes the title hymn, too. The new CD also has one of the all-time most popular church hymns, "Amazing Grace", loved by all Christians. What a great gift this new CD would be for Mother's Day!
I can't wait to hear this new CD! I know it's going to be one of my favorites!

“Easter is a sacred day, a day of thanksgiving and divine worship,” President David O. McKay once said. “It is not a day just for rejoicing because of the opening of springtime, not merely an opportunity to display beautiful hats and fine clothing—it is an occasion for the expression of gratitude to God for having sent His Only Begotten Son into the world to be ‘the way, the truth, the life.’ ”

Creating and holding onto Easter activities that reflect President McKay’s words is a challenge for all Latter-day Saint families. Such traditions can not only effectively teach gospel principles and serve to strengthen testimonies, but can also help create an atmosphere in which family members gain self-esteem—thus helping build strong family relationships."

"Many families find scripture reading time the best opportunity to discuss the important Easter events. “My parents are firm believers in family councils,” says one LDS teenager. “My dad sometimes jokes and calls them summit meetings. We meet together when things get fouled up or when something really neat happens. My parents let us discuss what we think we should do about problems, and they let us decide what we want to do for vacations and holidays. We always talk about our activities, but sometimes I know it’s the way they ask questions that makes us think. One Easter they asked, ‘What would Jesus have you do?’ ”

Giving children an opportunity to choose their activities gives the traditions added interest. Children are more likely to embrace an activity if they help choose it.

Family prayer is given additional emphasis in many families the week before Easter, with more than usual attention given to thanks for Jesus’ love, his sacrifice, the Atonement, and the Resurrection. The members of one family set personal goals for a particular virtue they wish to achieve. Each person strives throughout the week to achieve his goal and to have a “perfect day” on Easter.

The “show love tradition” is also observed in many LDS homes both at Christmas and at Easter. After discussing the great love of Jesus, family members make a special effort during the week to show the love they have for one another."

Endure to the End

“There is nothing that we are enduring that Jesus does not understand”

"We are told in the scriptures that it is essential to endure to the end:
“Wherefore, if ye shall be obedient to the commandments, and endure to the end, ye shall be saved at the last day. And thus it is” (1 Ne. 22:31).
“Be patient in afflictions, for thou shalt have many; but endure them, for, lo, I am with thee, even unto the end of thy days” (D&C 24:8).
“Behold, we count them happy which endure” (James 5:11).
Examples of faithfully enduring to the end are taught by prophets of all ages as they demonstrate courage while enduring trials and tribulations to carry forth the will of God. Our greatest example comes from the life of our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ. When suffering upon the cross at Calvary, Jesus felt the loneliness of agency when He pled to His Father in Heaven, “Why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matt. 27:46). The Savior of the world was left alone by His Father to experience, of His own free will and choice, an act of agency which allowed Him to complete His mission of the Atonement.
Jesus knew who He was—the Son of God. He knew His purpose—to carry out the will of the Father through the Atonement. His vision was eternal—“to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man” (Moses 1:39).
The Lord could have called on legions of angels to take Him down from the cross, but He faithfully endured to the end and completed the very purpose for which He had been sent to earth, thus granting eternal blessings to all who will ever experience mortality.
It is touching to me that when the Father introduced His Son to prophets in dispensations since, He would say, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (2 Pet. 1:17), or “Behold my Beloved Son, … in whom I have glorified my name” (3 Ne. 11:7). "

Blessings of General Conference

I'm so excited that Spring General Conference is coming up this weekend! For about three years, prior to my conversion to the Church last November, I watched every talk of every General Conference. I learned alot. I felt the Spirit. I was blessed. The General Conferences were a big part of my deciding to join the Church. This coming Conference will be the first one I will enjoy as an official member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and I am so looking forward to it. It is my prayer that all LDS members and investigators will attend or tune in to the General Conference this coming weekend and receive the blessings. Make it a priority.

"How can you be safe in these challenging times so you can fully do your part in this great work and find true happiness in this life and the life to come?

It is not surprising that in the face of tremendous evil and temptation the Lord does not leave us to find our way on our own. In fact, there is more than enough guidance available to each of us if we will listen. You have received the gift of the Holy Ghost to direct and inspire you. You have the scriptures, parents, Church leaders and teachers. You also have the words of the prophets, seers, and revelators who live in our day. There is so much guidance and direction available that you won’t make major mistakes in your life unless you consciously ignore the guidance you receive.

Tonight I would like to focus on one of these sources of guidance—the living prophets, seers, and revelators that we sustained today. In fact, I would like to focus on one of the main ways we get direction from them—general conference.

Conferences have been part of the Church since the beginning of this dispensation. The first conference was held just two months after the Church was organized. We meet twice a year to be instructed by the General Authorities and general officers of the Church. The proceedings of these conferences are available through various means, both print and electronic.

My mother loved general conference. She always tuned in the radio and TV and turned the volume loud enough that it was difficult to find a place in the house where conference couldn’t be heard. She wanted her children to listen to the talks and would ask us from time to time what we remembered. Once in a while I went outside with one of my brothers to play ball during a Saturday conference session. We would take a radio with us because we knew our mother might quiz us later. We would play ball and occasionally take a break to listen carefully so we could report to Mom. I doubt my mother was fooled when we both happened to remember the same thing from an entire session.

That is no way to listen to conference. I have since repented. I have grown to love general conference, I’m sure partly because of my mother’s love for the words of the living prophets. I remember listening to the sessions of a particular conference all alone in an apartment while I was in college. The Holy Ghost witnessed to my soul that Harold B. Lee, the President of the Church at that time, was truly a prophet of God. This happened before I went into the mission field, and I was excited to testify of a living prophet because I had come to know for myself. I have had that same witness about each of the prophets since that time.

When I was in the mission field, the Church didn’t have the satellite system, and the country where I served did not have broadcasts of general conference. My mother sent me audiotapes of the sessions, and I listened to them over and over again. I grew to love the voices and the words of the prophets and apostles.

Recently I was reading the journal of my great-grandfather, Nathaniel Hodges, who was called on a mission to England in 1883. He told of coming to Salt Lake City to be set apart for his mission and attending conference while he was there. Listen to his description of that conference: “Went to meetings in large Tabernacle all day. There were splendid instructions given. The remarks of Joseph F Smith and George Q Cannon and President John Taylor were particularly powerful. I heard some of the oldest inhabitants say they never attended a more powerful and Spiritual Conference.” 1

I think the members of the Church have similar feelings about each general conference. It seems that each is more powerful and spiritual than the last.

In order for the messages of general conference to change our lives, we need to be willing to follow the counsel we hear. The Lord explained in a revelation to the Prophet Joseph Smith “that when ye are assembled together ye shall instruct and edify each other, that ye may know … how to act upon the points of my law and commandment.” But knowing “how to act” isn’t enough. The Lord in the next verse said, “Ye shall bind yourselves to act in all holiness before me.”
This willingness to take action on what we have learned opens the doors for marvelous blessings."

A Declaration to All the World

A general conference of the Church is a declaration to all the world that Jesus is the Christ, that He and His Father, the God and Father of us all, appeared to the boy prophet Joseph Smith in fulfillment of that ancient promise that the resurrected Jesus of Nazareth would again restore His Church on earth and again 'come in like manner as [those Judean Saints had] seen him [ascend] into heaven' (Acts 1:11). This conference and every other conference like it is a declaration that He condescended to come to earth in poverty and humility, to face sorrow and rejection, disappointment and death in order that we might be saved from those very fates as our eternity unfolds, that 'with his stripes we are healed' (Isaiah 53:5). This conference proclaims to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people the loving Messianic promise that 'his mercy endureth for ever' (see Psalm 136:1).

"The Spirit of God", a Hymn of Promise

This is one of my most favorite hymns. Last November, I chose it for one of my Baptism songs, and then yesterday when attending my first Temple Dedication, it was played and sung again. The beautiful meaning of this hymn always makes me cry, in total gratitude for the Restoration of the Gospel in our time. We are so blessed!

Now seeds are just dimes to the man in the store,

And the dimes are the things that he needs;

And I've been to buy them in seasons before,

But have thought of them merely as seeds;

But it flashed through my mind as I took them this time,

“You have purchased a miracle here for a dime!”

I just read an article comparing the package of seeds, in the poem above to us, you and me. We are like a small package of seeds, with potential within, for the accomplisment of great and mighty things. Only God our Father knows the extent of the miracle of our potential and hidden power and beauty.

He delights in watching us blossom and bloom!

The White Horse Prophecy

This is the 300th post on "Day of Praise".

To celebrate, here is a very unusual, but intriguing post.

I don't know if the following is just a hoax or an actual prophecy by the first LDS president and prophet, Joseph Smith, Jr., in 1843. It was found recorded in a pioneer's journal.

Some of the phrases are very similar to comments heard daily on current political talk shows. "United States Constitution hanging by a thread....", "Banks of all nations failing....", "No reasonable Government...", "American revolution...", "Empire of the Crescent will...", "China will...", Russia will...", "No laws..."

The reason I find this prophecy so interesting is because I live in the Rocky Mountains and the prophecy mentions that this will be the safest place in the country in the future. I moved here from the Eastern part of the country, for no real apparent reason, other than I wanted to be near mountains. But after being here for almost 17 years, I feel it is the best place to be. (premonition?)

The prophecy says, "and there will be peace and love only in the Rocky Mountains....", "Peace and safety in the Rocky Mountains will be protected..."

The Prophet Joseph Smith, jr. never lived to see the Rocky Mountains.

The White Horse Prophecy

"A prophecy by Joseph Smith of coming calamities in the western hemisphere"

"The following is a copy from the Journal of Elder John J. Roberts, of Paradise, Utah."

"On about the 6th of May, 1843, a Grand Review of the Nauvoo Legion was held in Nauvoo. The Prophet Joseph Smith complimented them for their good discipline and evolutions performed. The weather being hot, he called for a glass of water. With the glass of water in hand, he said: "I will drink to your toast to the overthrow of the Mobocrats," which he did in the following language:

"Here's wishing they were in the middle of the sea in a stone canoe with iron paddles and that a shark swallowed the canoe and the Devil swallowed the shark and himself locked up in the northwest corner of Hell, the key lost and a blind man hunting it."

The next morning a man who heard the Prophet give the toast returned to visit the mansion of the Prophet and so abused him with bad language that he was ordered out by the Prophet. It was while the two were out that my attention was attracted to them, and hearing the man speaking in a loud tone of voice, I went towards them, the man finally leaving. There were then present the Prophet, Theodore Turley and myself. The Prophet began talking to us of the mobbings and deriding and persecutions we as a people had endured, "but we will have worse things to see. Our persecutors will have all the mobbings they want. Don't wish them any harm, for when you see their sufferings you will shed bitter tears for them."

While this conversation was going on we stood by his south wicket gate in a triangle. Turning to me, he said, "I want to tell you something of the future. I will speak in a parable like unto John the Revelator. You will go to the Rocky Mountains and you will be a great and mighty people established there, which I will call the White Horse of peace and safety." When the Prophet said, "You will see it," I said, "Where will you be at that time?" He said, "I shall never go there. Your enemies will continue to follow you with persecutions and they will make obnoxious laws against you in Congress to destroy the White Horse, but you will have a friend or two to defend you and throw out the worst parts of the law so they will not hurt you so much. You must continue to petition Congress all the time, but they will treat you like strangers and aliens and they will not give you your rights, but will govern you with strangers and commissioners.

You will see the Constitution of the United States almost destroyed. It will hang like a thread as fine as as a silk fiber." At that time the Prophet's countenance became sad, because as he said, "I love the Constitution; it was made by the inspiration of God; and it will be preserved and saved by the efforts of the White Horse, and by the Red Horse who will combine in its defense.

The White Horse will find the mountains full of minerals and they will become rich (at this time, it must be remembered, the precious metals were not known to exist in either the Rocky Mountains or California). You will see silver piled up in the streets. You will see the gold shoveled up like sand. Gold will be of little value then, even in a mercantile capacity; for the people of the world will have something else to do in seeking for salvation.

The time will come when the banks of every nation will fail and only two places will be safe where people can deposit their gold and treasure. This place will be the White Horse and England's vaults. A terrible revolution will take place in the land of America, such as has never been seen before; for the land will be left without a Supreme Government, and every specie of wickedness will be practiced rampantly in the land. Father will be against son and son against father; mother against daughter and daughter against mother. The most terrible scenes of bloodshed, murder and rape that have ever been imagined or looked upon will take place. People will be taken from the earth and there will be peace and love only in the Rocky Mountains. This will cause many hundreds of thousands of the honest in heart of the world to gather there, not because they would be Saints, but for safety and because they will be so numerous that you will be in danger of famine, but not for want of seed, time and harvest, but because of so many to be fed. Many will come with bundles under their arms to escape the calamities for there will be no escape except only by escaping and fleeing to Zion. Those that come to you will try to keep the laws and be one with you for they will see your unity and the greatness of your organization.

The Turkish Empire of the Crescent will be the first power to be disputed, for freedom must be given for the Gospel to be preached in the Holy Land. The Lord took of the best blood of the nations and planted them on the small islands now called England and Great Britain and gave them power in the nations for a thousand years and their power will continue with them that they may keep the balance of power; and they will keep Russia from sweeping her power over the world. England and France are now bitter enemies but they will be allied together and be united to keep Russia from conquering the world. The two popes, Greek and Catholic, will eventually come together in their decline and be united. The Protestant Religions do not know how much they are indebted to Henry VIII for throwing off the Pope's bill and establishing the Protestant faith. He was the only monarch who could do so at that time and he did it because the nation was at his back to sustain him. One of the peculiar features in England is the established Red-coat; a uniform making so remarkable a target to shoot at, and yet they have conquered wherever they have gone. The reason for this will be known to them some day as red is seen in a different color threading through under all history. The lion and the unicorn of England comes from there being so much blood of Israel in the nation. While the terrible things of which I have mentioned are going on, England will be neutral until it becomes so inhuman that she will interfere to stop the shedding of blood and history will be more properly understood. England and France will unite together to make peace, not to subdue the nations. She will find this nation so broken up and so many claiming government, till there will be no reasonable government. Then it will appear to the other nations, or powers, as though England had taken possession of the country. The Black Horse will flee to the invaders and will join them for they have fear of becoming slaves again; knowing that England did not believe in slavery, they will flee to them that they believe will make them safe. Armed with British bayonets, the doings of the Black Horse will be terrible." Here the Prophet said that he could not bear to look longer upon the scenes as shown to him in vision and he asked the Lord to close the scenes.

Continuing, he said: "During this time the Great White Horse will have gathered strength, sending out elders to gather the honest in heart from among the Pale Horse, or people of the United States, to stand by the Constitution of the United States as it was given by the inspiration of God. In these days which are yet to come God will set up a Kingdom never to be thrown down, but other Kingdoms to come into it, and those Kingdoms that will not let the Gospel be preached in their lands will be humbled until they will."

"England the Germany, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Holland and Belgium have a considerable amount of the blood of Israel among the people which must be gathered out. Those nations will submit to the nations of God. England will be the last of the nations to surrender, but when she does she will do it as a whole in comparison as she threw off the Catholic power. The nobility knows that the gospel is true, but it has not pomp enough, and grandeur and influence for them to yet embrace it. They are proud and will not acknowledge the Kingdom of God or come into it until they see the power it will have. Peace and safety in the Rocky Mountains will be protected by the Guardians, the White and Red Horses. The coming of the Messiah among his people will be so natural that only those who see him will know that he has come, but he will come and give his laws unto Zion and minister unto his people. This will not be his coming in the clouds of Heaven to take vengeance on the wicked of the world."

"The temple in Jackson county, Missouri, will be built in that generation. The saints will think that there will not be time to build it, but with all the help you can receive, you can put up a great temple quickly. You will have all the gold, silver and precious stones you need, for these things will only be for the beautifying of the temple. Also, all the skilled mechanics you want and the Ten Tribes of Israel will help build it. When you see this land bound with iron, you may look forward to Jackson county."

At this point, he made a pause, and looking up as though the vision were still in view, he said: "There is a land beyond the Rocky Mountains that will be invaded by the heathen Chinese unless great care and protection be given." Speaking of the heathen nations, he said: "Where there is no law there is no condemnation; this will apply to them. Power will be given to the White Horse to rebuke the nations afar off, and you obey it, for the laws go forth from Zion. The last great struggle that Zion will ever have to contend with will be when the whole of America will be made the Zion of God. Those opposing will be called Gog and Magog. The nations of the earth will be led by the Russian Czar and his power will be great, but all opposition will be overcome and this land will be the Zion of our God. Amen."

For all of us this life is a time of sifting and refining. We all face trials. Individual members in the early days of the Church were tested and refined when they had to decide if they had the faith . . . to put their belongings in a wagon or a pioneer handcart and travel across the American plains. Some did not have the faith. Those who did traveled "with faith in every footstep." In our time we are going through an increasingly difficult time of refining and testing. The tests are more subtle because the lines between good and evil are being eroded. Very little seems to be sacred in any of our public communication. In this environment we will need to make sure where we stand all of the time in our commitment to eternal truths and covenants.”

In contrast to the institutions of the world, which teach us to know something, the gospel of Jesus Christ challenges us to become something.

"The Apostle Paul taught that the Lord’s teachings and teachers were given that we may all attain “the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ” (Eph. 4:13). This process requires far more than acquiring knowledge. It is not even enough for us to be convinced of the gospel; we must act and think so that we are converted by it. In contrast to the institutions of the world, which teach us to know something, the gospel of Jesus Christ challenges us to become something.

Many Bible and modern scriptures speak of a final judgment at which all persons will be rewarded according to their deeds or works or the desires of their hearts. But other scriptures enlarge upon this by referring to our being judged by the condition we have achieved.

The prophet Nephi describes the Final Judgment in terms of what we have become: “And if their works have been filthiness they must needs be filthy; and if they be filthy it must needs be that they cannot dwell in the kingdom of God” (1 Ne. 15:33; emphasis added). Moroni declares, “He that is filthy shall be filthy still; and he that is righteous shall be righteous still” (Morm. 9:14; emphasis added; see also Rev. 22:11–12; 2 Ne. 9:16; D&C 88:35). The same would be true of “selfish” or “disobedient” or any other personal attribute inconsistent with the requirements of God. Referring to the “state” of the wicked in the Final Judgment, Alma explains that if we are condemned by our words, our works, and our thoughts, “we shall not be found spotless; … and in this awful state we shall not dare to look up to our God” (Alma 12:14).

From such teachings we conclude that the Final Judgment is not just an evaluation of a sum total of good and evil acts—what we have done. It is an acknowledgment of the final effect of our acts and thoughts—what we have become. It is not enough for anyone just to go through the motions. The commandments, ordinances, and covenants of the gospel are not a list of deposits required to be made in some heavenly account. The gospel of Jesus Christ is a plan that shows us how to become what our Heavenly Father desires us to become."

Who is Moroni?

Every Monday morning, I go by the Salt Lake Temple, as I go to class at BYU-Salt Lake. If you have ever driven by a Latter-day Saint Temple, anywhere in the world, you may have wondered who/what is the statue of a bright golden guy, with a trumpet, on top of every LDS temple. He is the angel Moroni. Moroni stands for different things in LDS doctrine; most of all, Moroni is a messenger of Christ to all nations and peoples.

Who is Moroni (mah-ro'-ni)?

The Book of Moroni, is one of several books contained in the Book of Mormon.

Moroni (prophet), is a figure in the Book of Mormon, the son of Mormon and last writer in the Book of Mormon

Angel Moroni, is the angel that visited Joseph Smith, Jr. on numerous occasions and led him to the gold plates on which the Book of Mormon was originally written.

Captain Moroni, is a figure in the Book of Mormon, the leader of the Nephite army.

"Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God." A Great Light

"And it shall come to pass in the last days, when the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations shall flow unto it." (2Nephi 12:2, Isaiah 2:2)

I love this photo, from the Deseret Morning News, of the new Draper Temple, in the background and the new Oquirrh Mountain Temple in the foreground. There is also another temple, the Jordan River Temple, in between these two, but not in line for the camera shot. Along with the Salt Lake Temple, we now have four temples in the Salt Lake Valley! I love the verse above, from 2Nephi12:2 and Isaiah 2:2. The "mountain of the Lord's house" is, of course, referring to the temple. And I love how it says "established in the top of the mountains", did you know that the word "Utah" is from the Ute Indian word meaning "top of the mountains"?

Today, we are going to visit the open house of the Draper Temple again. We went on the first day, back in January, and now we're going again and taking three teenagers with us. One of the boys we have known since he was 2 years old. He's always been a good boy, kind and loving, but when he was 15, about a year ago, he got in with the wrong crowd of kids and got addicted to hard drugs. Through lots of prayer, intervention, a return to right-minded friends and God's grace, he was turned around and is now back to his happy, loving and giving self. He is now helping other kids to get clean. He is an inspiration to many. Now he is ready to open himself up to the spirituality he feels inside himself. Like Joseph Smith, he is looking for which church to join. He's met with the missionaries a few times, and when I asked him if he'd like to go through the temple at the open house, he accepted gladly, and is bringing along a couple friends. What a wonderful day!

And it shall come to pass...

The teachings of Isaiah are so important to me and feel so relevant to our times.
I have decided to start a second blog and devote it wholly to the writings of the Prophet Isaiah. His writings found both in the Bible, in the Old Testament, and in
2Nephi, in the Book of Mormon are so deep and all encompassing. Isaiah's words are both poetic and prophetic. They seem to me to be essential for instruction and inspiration in our current latter-day times.

Importance of Isaiah's Writings

The words of Isaiah . . . are written, ye have them before you, therefore search them (3 Nephi 20:11).
Ye ought to search these things. Yea, a commandment I give unto you that ye search these things diligently; for great are the words of Isaiah (3 Nephi 23:1).

"The Importance of Isaiah’s Writings"
"Isaiah’s name means “Jehovah saves” or “the Lord is salvation.” His life and teachings proclaim the message of Christ and the way of salvation Christ provided. John wrote that “the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” (Revelation 19:10). Using that statement as a criteria to evaluate, we must classify Isaiah among the greatest of the prophets, because he powerfully and eloquently testified of Christ and His work.
The Savior Himself affirmed the importance of Isaiah’s writings when, in His visit to the Nephites, He commanded them to search diligently the words of Isaiah (see 3 Nephi 20:11). The Lord said, “Great are the words of Isaiah. For surely he spake as touching all things concerning my people which are of the house of Israel” (3 Nephi 23:1–2). The words Jacob spoke to his people can also be applied to us. Jacob said, “There are many things which have been spoken by Isaiah which may be likened unto you, because ye are of the house of Israel” (2 Nephi 6:5). We also are of the house of Israel."

"I'm sure you remember the children's nursery rhyme that goes:

Mary, Mary, quite contrary
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells and cockle shells
And pretty maids all in a row.

My parents taught me all the old rhymes, and I loved them. I had no idea that some of the “cool” rhymes were a writer's way of speaking out against governments or secretly sharing belief in Christianity, or any of the other more sober reasons for those old favorites. I only knew that I loved to hear them and repeat them.

As an adult, my mind has, on occasion, been drawn to a line or two of some of these little poems, for the opportunity it has given me to teach principles that matter. Today, I'd like to share some thoughts on how our gardens grow.

Fertile soil is needed for good growth. Rain and sunshine are necessary for a good crop of vegetables, fruits or flowers. Extra nourishment in the form of fertilizer is a great bonus for better harvest. Good gardeners keep their plot tended well with weeding, pruning, and fussing over
their garden. Critters that can harm the roots, the tender shoots, the vines or the blooms must be dealt with and gotten rid of.

It takes daily overseeing to grow a healthy garden. Then the fruits of the work are ready for enjoyment! The pathway along the entire garden is a beautiful thing to behold. It is a place of peace and joy.

Building our lives is like growing a garden. In order to grow to our best potential, we have a perfect plan which, when followed, offers us the plentiful reward for our work. Let's take a brief look at a few ways of comparing “gardens”:

Fertile soil. Just as a garden needs it, the scriptures teach us the value of having a fertile place within in order to accept the seeds of righteousness that may grow as we go.

Rain. There are two thoughts here. One is that water is essential for life. Christ is the Living Water. Without Him, and the acceptance of that Living Water, we spiritually stagnate and wither away. Secondly, no one likes to go through dark times. It may be upsetting and upending when the dark clouds of trouble hang over us and threaten to destroy our peace! But with those rains and storms comes strength and greater faith. Even the strong winds of opposition cannot sway us from our focus on growing in spiritual health and vibrancy. With faith and hope in Christ, the rains are good for polishing, pruning, and preparing us.

Sunshine. The glad tidings of the sunshine of eternal truths are to our souls like the sunshine that brings warmth to our plants in the garden. It gladdens our heart and nurtures us to feel the "sunshine in the soul"!

"With Mine Own Hand, The Musical Account of Nephi" was featured at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah during Campus Education Week, in August 2008. I missed that performance, but can't wait to see this dramatic musical production performed. The soundtrack is beautiful and so well done, I would compare the quality to that of an Andrew Lloyd Webber production, it's that good!

There is a website where you can learn more about the production, listen to samples from the soundtrack, purchase the CD and learn where the musical will be performed next. You can also find out how you can perform this musical in your own local stake.

Some of the songs from the soundtrack are: " The Book, The Gift", "Trusting Son", "Visionary Man", "I Have Dreamed a Dream", "Look!", "A Work Everlasting", "Be Still and Know I Am God", "Love So Born", and "Driven Forth Before the Wind". There are over 25 songs on the two CD's. The orchestration is excellent, truly powerful and moving.

"With Mine Own Hand: The Musical Account of Nephi" was created as an expression of personal testimony. The writers, producers, directors, designers, crew, actors and singers are a group of close knit Latter-day Saint friends who, as an outgrowth of their commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ, have consecrated their talents to His work. Whole familes have been involved at every level, sacrificing significant time and resources to bring this project to fruition. "The snow came in the middle of the night, and by morning drifts had created weird shapes between the house and barn and across the front yard. There was a white blanket of snow everywhere. Schools, businesses, even the air force base and the university were closed. People had been warned not to drive unless absolutely necessary, and for three days I tried to keep busy sewing, crocheting, and writing letters.

But when Valentine’s Day arrived, I decided enough was enough. I wanted to do something special. I remembered the cookie bags my friend Vi had given me—still empty because we hadn’t been able to do our visiting teaching yet. Why not bake some cookies? I thought. I could also make some pumpkin bread from the last pumpkin that hadn’t ended up a jack-o’-lantern.

I went down to our basement storeroom to gather the ingredients. As I looked at the shelves of bottled fruit, vegetables, and other groceries, I felt thankful for the prophet’s counsel to be prepared for emergencies. Even though the roads were closed, we didn’t have to worry about where our next meal would come from. We had enough and to spare—enough to share with our neighbors.

Soon the kitchen smelled of spices and chocolate cookies. My husband, Clem, came in from the barn, sniffed, and asked: “Are you making me a valentine?”

“Yes,” I answered, “but not only for you—for our neighbors, too.” Just then we heard someone come into the garage. It turned out to be our neighbor from down the road and her two small sons. They had stopped by to ask if we had any stored water because their pipes were frozen. Again I thought of our blessings, and of how grateful I was that we had water to share with them.

We invited them in for a warm meal, and they soon left with several gallons of water in jugs—and their valentines. The boys were thrilled with their bag of cookies and a loaf of pumpkin bread. After cleaning up the kitchen and wrapping the loaves in foil, I filled the rest of the cookie bags, and Clem went out to deliver them to some of our other neighbors. A warm feeling came over me as I realized the blessings that come from following the counsel of our prophet. I was so thankful to be able to share with others."
